Port of Johnstown

A Strategic Gateway for Canadian Agriculture

The Port of Johnstown is Eastern Ontario’s premier multimodal hub, connecting Canada’s agricultural heartland to the world via the St. Lawrence Seaway. With direct marine, rail, and truck access, the Port moves grain, bulk commodities, and agricultural inputs across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Owned and operated by the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal, the Port is an economic driver, a partner to farmers, and a cornerstone of Canada’s food security.

V6 Agronomy × Port of Johnstown

In 2025, the Port launched a long-term partnership with V6 Agronomy to transform agricultural supply chains in Canada. The collaboration establishes the V6 Terminal at POJ as Eastern Canada’s import hub for enhanced efficiency and phosphate fertilizers, creates a turnkey vessel-to-rail and rail-to-vessel corridor, and expands exports of high-value prairie grains to EU and MENA markets. The terminal is slated to be operational in Q4 2025.

Project Specs

  • Groundbreaking: July 29, 2025 (press release July 30, 2025)
  • Phase 1 (Building #1): Vessel discharge capacity up to 18,000 tonnes
  • Master Plan: Four buildings with on‑site storage up to 150,000 tonnes
  • Products: Enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) & commercial phosphates
  • Objective: Reshore critical inputs Canada does not currently produce domestically and stabilize costs & timing

Circular Logistics

In collaboration with CN Rail, V6 is implementing a circular model to reduce empty returns. Outbound phosphate shipments will be paired with return loads of Canadian lentils, pulses, potash, grains, and sulphur bound for EU, MENA, and Asia — cutting inefficiencies and emissions while leveraging the Port’s unique rail‑marine configuration.
